History at Woodbank...

Here at Woodbank Primary School, we strive to give our children a deep, wide knowledge of how England and then Britain came to be, how Britain has shaped and is shaped by the outside world, and how that history still affects the world they are growing up in to. We want to ensure all children no matter of their culture, ethnicity or personal differences will be able to access the History curriculum and have a greater understanding of the past in Britain and the wider world. To introduce children into the richness that our national and international history holds, by providing cultural capital, wider experiences, diverse voices and more to help shape the curriculum thinking that follows. We intend to equip children with an awareness of the world around them and their heritage to ensure well–rounded pupils through providing a range of sources to understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed. History at Woodbank is ambitious and motivating. It aims to allow children to be curious and ask perceptive questions about the process of change, broadening their understanding of the complexity of people’s lives, diversity in Britain and how the past has had a significant and positive impact on numerous things and has also been influenced by the wider world. These including; the relationships between different groups, the diversities of cultures and of their individual identities alone, as well as challenges of their time. The History curriculum has been designed with the intent that our children will become increasingly critical and analytical thinkers. They will also be able to discover links between the History and their locality they live within, drawing on similarities and differences in given time frames and across previously taught History. We aim to support pupils in building their understanding of chronology in each year group, making connections over periods of time and developing a chronologically secure knowledge of History. Children will be able to differentiate between source types and explain how History can differ in interpretations. However, will be able to form their own opinions about the past from their enquiry into historically themed questions.
